Below, I explain how psoriasis may change during pregnancy and provide some practical advice for managing the disease during this stage of life. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How does pregnancy affect psoriasis?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Psoriasis activity can change during pregnancy. Some women notice an improvement in their skin lesions, while others experience little change or a worsening of the disease. Psoriasis may also change again after childbirth. It is also important to remember that some psoriasis treatments may <a href=\"https:\/\/www.actasdermo.org\/es-psoriasis-embarazo-revision-i--articulo-S0001731013002792\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">not be appropriate<\/a> during pregnancy or breastfeeding. For this reason, you should speak to your dermatologist before trying to conceive whenever possible, or as soon as you know that you are pregnant. This allows your treatment to be reviewed and the most appropriate options to be considered for your individual circumstances.   <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Safety of psoriasis treatments during pregnancy<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some treatments commonly used for psoriasis, including certain topical and systemic medicines, may need to be avoided or modified during pregnancy because of their potential effects on the developing baby. However, this does not mean that psoriasis cannot be treated during pregnancy. Simple measures such as appropriate moisturisers and emollients can help reduce dryness and itching. Certain topical medicines may also be used when clinically appropriate, depending on the active ingredient, the amount required and the area being treated. Narrowband UVB phototherapy may also be considered in selected patients under medical supervision.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is also an increasing amount of evidence regarding the use of some systemic and biological treatments during pregnancy. The suitability of any treatment depends on the specific medicine, the severity of the psoriasis, previous treatment response and the individual circumstances of both mother and pregnancy. For this reason, treatment decisions should always be made with your dermatologist and, when appropriate, your obstetric team. Medication should not be stopped or changed without medical advice.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Advice for managing psoriasis during pregnancy<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The following practical measures may help support psoriasis management during pregnancy.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Look after your skin<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wash your skin gently using mild products and avoid cleansers that cause irritation. Pat the skin dry rather than rubbing it. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Use moisturisers regularly<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regular use of moisturisers or emollients can help reduce dryness, scaling and discomfort. Applying them after bathing or showering can help maintain skin hydration. Choose products that are well tolerated by your skin and avoid ingredients that cause irritation.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Be aware of factors that may worsen your psoriasis<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pay attention to factors that appear to coincide with worsening symptoms in your individual case. These may include significant <a href=\"https:\/\/drgonzalezcantero.com\/en\/stress-psoriasis\/\">stress<\/a>, skin irritation, certain infections or other recognised triggers. Sunburn should always be avoided. Although ultraviolet exposure may improve psoriasis in some patients, deliberate sun exposure is not a substitute for medically supervised phototherapy, and appropriate sun protection remains important during pregnancy.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Wear comfortable, breathable clothing<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Loose-fitting clothing made from breathable fabrics may help reduce friction, overheating and irritation, particularly if psoriasis affects skin folds.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Follow a balanced diet<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A balanced diet is particularly important during pregnancy because it supports the health and nutritional needs of both mother and baby. A <a href=\"https:\/\/drgonzalezcantero.com\/en\/mediterranean-diet-psoriasis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mediterranean-style dietary pattern<\/a> can provide a useful framework for a varied diet containing vegetables, fruit, pulses, whole grains, healthy fats and appropriate sources of protein. There is no specific diet that treats psoriasis during pregnancy, and unnecessary dietary restrictions should be avoided unless they have been recommended for a medical reason. Individual nutritional requirements during pregnancy should be discussed with the appropriate healthcare professional. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Speak to your dermatologist <\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you have psoriasis and are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, your treatment should be reviewed. Some medicines may need to be discontinued before conception or changed during pregnancy, while other treatments may remain appropriate. Phototherapy or other alternatives may be considered in certain situations. If you also have psoriasis, it is important for the healthcare professionals involved in your care to know about the disease and the treatments you are receiving. Discuss any concerns about symptoms, medication or changes in your psoriasis with your doctors. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depending on the severity of the disease and the treatment required, coordinated care between your dermatologist and the healthcare professionals managing your pregnancy may be advisable.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you develop new symptoms or your psoriasis worsens, seek medical advice rather than assuming that treatment options are limited because you are pregnant. Psoriasis can still be treated during pregnancy, although the choice of therapy requires careful individual assessment. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Emotional wellbeing and support<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pregnancy can involve emotional and physical changes, and living with a chronic condition such as psoriasis may create additional concerns for some women. If you find it helpful, patient support groups \u2014 either online or in person \u2014 can provide an opportunity to share experiences with other people facing similar situations.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If worry, anxiety or low mood become persistent or affect your everyday life, discuss this with your healthcare team. Your dermatologist, GP, obstetric team or a mental health professional can help you access appropriate support when needed.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusions on psoriasis and pregnancy<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are pregnant and have psoriasis, appropriate medical follow-up and good communication with your healthcare team are particularly important. Pregnancy can change the course of psoriasis, and some treatments may need to be reviewed or adapted. However, treatment options remain available and can be selected according to your individual clinical circumstances. The aim is to achieve appropriate control of the disease while taking into account the health of both mother and baby.
