Its onset is often described as having two main age peaks: one during adolescence and early adulthood and another later in life, often from around the age of 50 onwards. There is no specific age at which psoriasis will necessarily develop. However, epidemiological studies indicate that <strong>a substantial proportion of cases are diagnosed before the age of 40<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Age of onset of psoriasis and associated factors<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When considering the age at which psoriasis first appears, two broad patterns are commonly described.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Early-onset psoriasis: between approximately 15 and 35 years of age<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the more common pattern and is often associated with a stronger genetic predisposition. Several factors may be relevant to the development of psoriasis in this age group: <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Genetic factors<\/strong>: Hereditary susceptibility plays an important role. If a parent has psoriasis, the likelihood of their child developing the disease is higher than in the general population. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Immune dysregulation<\/strong>: Psoriasis is associated with dysregulation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msdmanuals.com\/es\/hogar\/trastornos-inmunol%C3%B3gicos\/biolog%C3%ADa-del-sistema-inmunitario\/introducci%C3%B3n-al-sistema-inmunitario\">immune system<\/a>, in which inflammatory pathways become abnormally activated. This leads to accelerated turnover of skin cells and contributes to the development of the characteristic red, scaly plaques. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Stress<\/strong>: Many adolescents and adults report that periods of significant stress coincide with the onset or worsening of psoriasis. However, the relationship is complex and stress should not be regarded as a universal or direct cause of the disease.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Infections<\/strong>: Certain infections may precipitate psoriasis in susceptible individuals. Streptococcal throat infection, for example, is a well-recognised trigger for guttate psoriasis.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hormonal factors<\/strong>: Psoriasis may first appear or change in activity during periods of significant hormonal change, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/spanish\/puberty.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">puberty<\/a>, although hormones are only one of several factors that may be involved.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Late-onset psoriasis: after the age of 50<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Psoriasis can also first develop later in life. In some patients, late-onset disease may have somewhat different clinical or genetic characteristics, although there is considerable variation between individuals. Factors that may be relevant at this stage include: <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Changes in the immune system with age<\/strong>: Ageing is associated with changes in immune regulation. These changes may influence susceptibility to inflammatory diseases, although the mechanisms involved in late-onset psoriasis remain complex.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Comorbidities and metabolic factors<\/strong>: People who develop psoriasis later in life may also have conditions such as metabolic syndrome, obesity, <a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/spanish\/diabetestype2.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">type 2 diabetes<\/a> or high blood pressure. These conditions are also more common with increasing age, so their relationship with psoriasis should be interpreted in the context of the patient\u2019s overall health.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Certain medicines<\/strong>: Some medicines, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/es\/diseases-conditions\/high-blood-pressure\/in-depth\/beta-blockers\/art-20044522\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">beta blockers<\/a>, lithium and certain <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Antipal%C3%BAdico\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">antimalarial medicines<\/a>, have been associated with the onset or worsening of psoriasis in susceptible individuals. Its development is influenced by multiple factors. Genetic predisposition is particularly important, especially in people with earlier-onset disease, while immune dysregulation, infections, hormonal changes and environmental factors may also contribute to when the disease first becomes clinically apparent. Because psoriasis is an immune-mediated inflammatory disease, its onset cannot usually be attributed to a single cause.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Lifestyle<\/strong> and environmental factors may also influence disease susceptibility or activity. Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption are associated with poorer health outcomes and may be relevant to psoriasis, while obesity and other metabolic factors are also associated with the disease. Environmental influences such as climate, skin irritation and certain exposures may affect psoriasis in some individuals, although their role varies and they should not be considered direct causes in every patient. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recognising psoriasis early and seeking assessment from a <a href=\"https:\/\/drgonzalezcantero.com\/en\/\">dermatologist specialising in psoriasis<\/a> allows an accurate diagnosis to be made and appropriate treatment to be introduced when necessary.
