Presentation on psoriasis and comorbidities at the 2022 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology, held in Boston.

Last March, I had the honour of being invited by the American Academy of Dermatology to present our research projects on psoriasis and its associated comorbidities, focusing particularly on the relationship between psoriasis and cardiovascular disease.

Some of the key conclusions from the topics discussed were:

• Myocardial infarction is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, and atherosclerosis is a major underlying cause.

• We know that inflammation can accelerate atherosclerosis, and psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disease.

• Patients with psoriasis have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease compared with the general population.

• We have imaging techniques that can help detect atherosclerotic plaques at an early stage.

• It is important to discuss this information with patients with psoriasis and to adopt appropriate measures both in terms of medical treatment and lifestyle — to reduce cardiovascular risk.
